weekly article

I picked Avatar because we tried to colonize the navis, they are humanoids who live on another planet. I will explain the plot and how it deals with imperialism.
Avatar was a great example of a movie that dealt with imperialism. It is very similar to Pocahontas another movie about imperialism. We were the bigger more power full group of people and wanted to take over the navi for their unobatanium. They used avatars of a real humans such as Jack Sully whom becomes the main character to learn more about them. A native predator chases Jake he escapes but is separated from the group. He is then saved by a native humanoid. She brings him back to the Home tree where the natives live. The leader of the clan makes Jack’s name dreamwalker and orders the woman that saved him Neytiri to teach him how to be a warrior. Jake is promised he will be able to walk again if he finds intelligence about the native people. The home tree is on top of the largest deposit of unobatanium and we want to bull doze it so we can mine it. The general then orders the home tree to be destroyed because the natives will not evacuate. The natives to longer trust Jake so he attaches himself to a large flying animal that is seldom ridden on. They then agree to save Jack’s partner Grace. Jack then gets many warriors from other clans to help fight us. A huge battle takes place and the natives suffer many casualties, the wild life then helps in the war effort and they win all humans except for jake are expelled from the planet.
The Imperialism connection is when we tried to take them over as a colony. We showed economic and political imperialism. It is economically because we wanted to expose their resources. It is politically because we wanted their land to be ours. It failed like many attempts do. If we would have succeeded the resources would have boosted our economy. This is a reason why we have in the past imperialized other countries. Another reason to imperialize is to improve our military by giving us a strategic location. Examples are Hawaii Guam and Puerto Rico. These places were an example of when we succeeded in imperialism. Failures include Cuba Philippines Vietnam and many more. A strong country may take one of two approaches imperialism or isolationism. There are positives and negatives for both choices. Another example besides the U.S. of imperialism is Russia. A strong isolationist country is China. Imperialism can give a country more resources but also a bad international image, and failures can be costly economically and can have high human tolls.
In conclusion, Avatar is a great example of a movie that deals with imperialism and shows what can happen if it fails. The US and other countries have tried imperialism both with success and failure. Isolationism is another route a country can take. We were isolationist when we first became a country.
